The District Independent Study Program is an instructional option for students enrolled in the Adelanto Elementary School District. The District Independent Study Program (ISP) is available to pupils from kindergarten through eighth grade and is designed to respond to the pupil’s unique educational needs, interests, aptitudes, and abilities within the confines of legal authority and school board policy. Pupils who participate in Independent Study Program have the same course requirements as pupils in regular classes. Participation in the District Independent Study Program is a voluntary option and must be approved by the parent or guardian or caregiver, and the School District.
Eligibility Criteria

Must have good attendance for the previous school year

Grades must be average or higher

Must be able to complete work independently

Must be able to attend virtual classes, in-person classes, and complete online coursework

Must attend all in-person assessments conducted throughout the school year

Parent/Guardian must be the learning coach at home

Is your student an independent learner who would like more time to focus on outside interests, including working or other extracurricular pursuits?
- Are you looking for specialized assignments that extend the content of regular courses of instruction for your child?
- Does your child need individualized alternative education designed to teach the knowledge and skills of the core curriculum?
- Is your student engaged in volunteer and community service activities or is he/she interested in participating in leadership opportunities that support and strengthen student achievement?
- Are you looking for learning options to continue your child’s studies during travel?
- Does your child need individualized student because his/her health would be put at risk by in-person instruction?
- Do your child have disabilities that would make it unsafe for him/her to attend in-person instruction?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions then the Adelanto Elementary School District Independent Study Program might be appropriate for your child.
Which ISP Program is Best for Your Student?
Short-Term or Site-Based ISP (Through Your Child's School) Your student’s school site may provide ISP for a minimum of 3 days and up to 15 days in a school year. Typically, your student’s teacher would provide and evaluate the assignments during this time.
Short-term ISP is allowed in the event of a family emergency, vacation, or other situation that would cause your student to be absent from school for 15 days or less. Short-term ISP can only be used for a maximum of 15 days in any school year. If your student needs additional days, you may want to consider Long-term or the District ISP Program. To request Short-term ISP, please contact the principal of your student’s school at least five days prior to the first date of the proposed absence.
District ISP To enroll in the District ISP Program, your student will be withdrawn from their home school and enrolled into the District Program. Students may remain in this program as long as they are maintain satisfactory academic progress and comply with the Master Agreement. A parent may opt to return their student to in-person instruction at any time. The child's previous school placement is not guaranteed when they return to in-person learning.
Standards Aligned All courses and materials used in the Independent Study Program are aligned to state content standards. Supplemental materials may be used to support individual student interests and learning styles. (EC 51745 (a)(3)
The Master Agreement The Master Agreement for Independent Study Program serves as an authorization to substitute the student’s work product for the student’s presence in the classroom. It shall be signed and in effect prior to the start of Independent Study. The Master Agreement must be signed prior to the student's first day in attendance of the Independent Study Program (ISP).
Equal Educational Opportunity The Independent Study Program provided by the Adelanto Elementary School District will be substantially equivalent in quantity and quality to classroom instruction. Students will not receive an alternative curriculum. (EC 51745 (a)
