HIV Prevention & Sexual Health Education

The Healthy Youth Act: California Education Code (EC) sections 51930–51939

Enacted January 1, 2016, this law integrates the instruction of comprehensive sexual health education and HIV prevention education. The law requires school districts to ensure that all pupils in grades seven to twelve receive comprehensive sexual health education and HIV prevention education at least once in middle school and once in high school.  The AESD provides this education to our 8th grade students through their Science class using the Positive Prevention Plus curriculum.  Parents are encouraged to review the curriculum, which is available at your child's school (front office) and at the AESD front office.  Due to copyright issues, we are unable to post the curriculum online.  Education Code provides parents the opportunity to opt their child out of any or all of this instruction.  If you would like to opt your child out, please fill out the form located HERE (or HERE in Spanish) and return it to your school by April 15th.
